The term Blue cannabis refers to any cannabis strain that has the Blueberry variety in its genetic heritage. The original Blueberry strain was developed by Dutch Passion in the late 1970s and has won numerous High Times Cups. Blueberry cannabis is a mostly Indica variety with dark leaves tending to blue and purple hues, though not all Blue strains will have a blueish and or purplish complexion. The coloration of cannabis is dependent on a little substance called anthocyanins. This is a pigment compound falling under the ‘flavonoid’ category of plant components and is known for its health-promoting properties such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial effects. Anthocyanins are also found in actual blueberries, cabbage, eggplants and other blue/purple foods known for their health benefits, so yes, cannabis can be regarded as a health food as well! The darker coloration doesn’t appear until well into the flowering stage, closer to harvest when night temperatures can get quite cool (53-60 °F/12-15 °C). Slightly more alkaline pH levels will also increase the blue hues, which means that even if genetically identical, plants may produce different results depending on the conditions they are grown in (temperatures, soil pH, etc.).
Although producing slightly lower than average yields, Blueberry marijuana has massive levels of THC (almost 20%), leading to a strong and euphoric high that can seem to have more Sativa-like effects than Indica despite the plant’s stature. Most strains of Blue cannabis stick to the Indica side of the equation with strains such as Kushberry, Blue Mystic and Blue Cheese delivering a heavy Indica stone as well. Others, like Crimea Blue, SoGouda and Blue Haze try to inject some more Sativa into the mix delivering an uplifting high more in keeping with the original Blueberry seed strain.
