Northern Lights #1

Overview

Unravelling the true genetic provenance of the Northern Lights strain is like trying to unravel your Granny’s knitting. The internet abounds with conflicting information, and even when armed with the correct information, you never know what you’re getting because Northern Lights has become a generic term amongst cannabis culture.

What we do know is that Northern Lights #1 is a true inbred Afghani strain, and the Thai sativa that was incorporated into some of the later lineages is not present. This results in a genetically homogenous and consequently very stable strain. Northern Lights #1, and indeed its Northern Lights relatives, have become an essential building block to many other strains, mostly due to their stability, pleasant effects, and reasonable yields.

Northern Lights #1 forms a short, squat structure that will establishes a central cola on a single stem, making it ideal for Sea of Green methods. It sports broad, leathery, dark green leaves. Like most indicas, Northern Lights #1 is robust and can tolerate most growing conditions. However, she’s best grown outdoors and is highly resilient. Her short flowering time is another notable characteristic – around 45-50 days. Yields are also admirable, approximately 400-500g/m².

The buds are described as emerald green and crystalline. They’re typical indica-esque: tight, compact and large. She emits a sweet and spicy aroma that is very captivating to the nostrils. Deeper into flowering the scent shifts to hints of pine and wood. Her taste also resembles an initial earthy pine upon first inhaling, before transitioning to a sweeter citrus flavour.

Northern Lights #1 produces a soothing deep body stone that is very dreamy and relaxing. Best enjoyed in the evening at the end of a long day, when there’s nothing else to do but chill. Medicinal properties are also present. The warm and comforting high helps to relax muscles, stimulate appetite and encourage better sleep.
